The Wolf Point Wolves couldn’t be stopped as they earned an impressive 62-51 home boys’ basketball win over Glendive on Friday, Jan. 14. The Red Devils entered the contest as the fifth-ranked team in Class A.

“It’s a big win for Wolf Point,” Coach Troy Blount said of his team’s non-conference victory. “The guys are playing hard and gaining confidence.”

The coach noted that junior guard Kelby Bauer enjoyed another outstanding game with 29 points for the Wolves.

Glendive’s only lead of the contest came at 2-0. Three-pointers by Jaxon Azure and Bauer led the Wolves to an 8-2 advantage.

A drive by Corey Martell put the Wolves up 13-9 at the end of the opening quarter.

After a basket by Riley Basta opened the second quarter, the Wolves gained the upper-hand with seven straight points on a basket by Ethan Blount off a pass from Juliun Benson and five points by Bauer. Three-pointers by Benson and Azure helped Wolf Point increase the gap to 26-18.

A hoop by Kraven Silk off a long pass from Benson and another three-pointer by Bauer helped Wolf Point take a 31-22 advantage. The freethrow shooting of Michael Murphy and Basta pulled the Red Devils to 34-27 at intermission.

The Wolves kept rolling in the third quarter as a drive by Silk and an inside shot by Shastin Damon increased the margin to 11 points. After baskets by Azure and Bauer put the gap at 42-29, the Red Devils responded with the game’s next seven points. Wolf Point held a 47-38 lead after three quarters of play.

Glendive pulled as close as 49-43 on an inside shot by Chase Crockett with 5:21 remaining, but the Wolves struck back with a drive by Silk and four free tosses by Bauer for a 55-43 advantage with 2:50 left.

The Red Devils were unable to get closer than eight points down the stretch.

Reaching double figures for the Wolves were Bauer with 29 and Azure with 10. Also scoring were Benson with eight, Silk with six, Martell with five, Damon with two and Blount with two.

Top scorers for Glendive were Basta with 17 points, Taven Coon with 13, Murphy with nine and Crockett with eight.
