Wolf Point’s wrestlers started off January in Chester at its mixer. The Wolves had only two student-athletes compete: Chance Smith and Maddox Reum. Other wrestlers went to the snowball dance.

“They both wrestled well. They were a combined 3-1,” Wolf Point coach Scott Vandall said. “Chance Smith did great, he got two wins. One was a divisional match-up. Maddox Reum did great. He went 1-1. Maddox made one mistake and the other kid capitalized. We were very happy to see Maddox on the mat. He has been battling injuries and illnesses.”

At the Cut Bank Invitational, Smith went 0-2.

“Not going to lie, we were disappointed with the outcome,” Vandall said. “Chance just didn’t wrestle really well on Friday. We talked and hopefully we got it fixed.”

Reum went 2-2 on Friday. He had a tough first round. “He was losing to a Great Falls JV kid and came back and won by fall,” Vandall said. “Then he had the second ranked kid in the state, Tugg Taylor. He did a great job. He was in deep on a couple shots and I think that surprised Tugg. He lost, but it took three rounds.”

Reum went on to the wrestle backs and won his next match but lost a good following match.

“Maddox is a great kid and has lots of potential. We just need to get him healthy,” Vandall said.

Smith wrestled Saturday and went 2-0.

“He did some great work,” Vandall said. “Maddox didn’t wrestle Saturday. He didn’t feel good.”

The Wolves wrestled in Fairfield on Thursday, Jan. 13. Wolf Point was without Reum and Joli Beston.

“Jordan Davis had a great night. He went 2-0. This was a big pick me up for Jordan. He has been in a little slump,” Vandall said. “He worked through it and it’s starting to come. Chance Smith wrestles well. He went 1-1. He had some ups and downs that night, but we were happy with the effort put forth.”

Mason Garfield had one match and won it handily. “We had a surprise addition this weekend with Jayceon Clark. He went 0-2 but showed us that things are starting to stick and understanding what we are trying to teach him. He is still a little heavy and we are going to work on that see if we can’t get him down the next couple weeks so he can wrestle at divisionals.”

On Friday, Jan. 14, Wolf Point competed at the Choteau classic. Davis went 1-2 in the meet but was close to making day two. He won his first match handily and lost his second match. He was winning his third match and got caught. “He has really started to show up on the mat, we’re happy with that,” Vandall said. “We need to clean up some little things and we will be good.” Davis also went on and was 2-0 in the JV mixer.

Smith had a great meet. He lost his first match to teammate Mason Garfield.

“He got a bye and got in to day two. He beat a kid from Broadwater. This was to get into third and fourth,” Vandall said. “He lost his thirdand fourth-place match but did a good job. Chance also placed fourth in the meet.”

Clark didn’t wrestle on the varsity side. He did get some mat time on Saturday in the JV meet.

“He went 0-2 but again he did some good things,” Vandall said.

Garfield enjoyed a great weekend. He won his first match against teammate Smith.

“He controlled his second match, sending him to the finals. He sure made it interesting. Mason beat this kid in Great Falls 11-3, and this kid is the fourth ranked kid in the state,” Vandall said. “Mason won it in overtime. It was a good match. I feel it didn’t have to be that close. He gave me a couple more gray hairs. I am really happy for him though. He finally got a championship. He has had to battle the toughest kids in the state all four years. Now, they’re battling him.”

Vandall added, “We have some things to fix and get ready for divisional. I need to give a big shout out to the coaches in the room for getting these things done. The big win is due to them.”

Junior high wrestlers Kasey Reed and Jessie Reed went to Helena to compete in the Helltown Throwdown AAU meet this month.

“I was told by Sidney coach Shane Gorder that they did great,” Vandall said.
