Poplar Girls Defeat Frazer, 87-25


Poplar’s girls’ basketball squad controlled action and captured an 87-25 home victory over Frazer on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The Indians outscored Frazer by a 28-0 margin during the third quarter of the non-conference game.
“It’s a work in progress,” Poplar Coach Bryce Kirk said. “We’re working to get better.”
Poplar held a 47-18 halftime advantage.
“We played good team defense in the second half,” Kirk said.
Morgen Nordwick and Rikki Belton opened the third quarter with baskets for a 5118 lead. Norkwick, a junior, scored the games next five points.
After a hoop by Belton, Kessee Erickson accounted for a steal and layup to put the margin at 63-18. Nordwick then scored off a pass from Medicine Cloud for a 64-18 lead. The Indians increased their lead to 50 points on baskets by Belton and Emma Rae Martell.
Poplar accounted for the final seven points of the quarter on a basket off a rebound by Teagan Escarcega, a layup by Gracelyn Medicine Cloud and a three-pointer by Allie Azure.
After the Indians struck for the first six points of the fourth quarter, Frazer’s Audrey Smoker drove in for a basket with 5:35 left in the contest. Frazer’s Baily Beston scored five points in the quarter.
Nordwick finished with 32 points, Belton had 10, Medicine Cloud added nine and Escarcega scored nine. Also scoring were Martell with five, Erickson with four, Azure with four, Bailey Dupree with four, Mattie Fallsdown with two, Kyra Stormy with two and Kylee Gourneau with one.
Leading Frazer with seven points each were Beston and Angel Nelligan.
The Indians jumped out to a 26-8 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin to 47-18 at the half.
Poplar’s girls then defeated Fairview on Friday, Jan. 7, and Dodson on Saturday, Jan. 8.
