Wolf Point’s girls exploded for the last 16 points of the first half and picked up a 6857 victory at Poplar on Friday, Dec. 17.

The Wolves trailed by a 2726 margin until Sierra Hamilton hit a pair of free throws with 2:46 left in the half. Josie Kolstad then hit two free throws with 2:29 remaining in the half. After a steal by KJ St. Marks, Kolstad scored on a drive for a 32-27 advantage.

After Katelyn MacDonald took a charge, Kolstad added a free throw. Five straight points by Hamyanie Campbell put Wolf Point up by a 38-27 lead. A drive by Kolstad and a baseline shot by J’Elle Garfield, after a steal by Mac-Donald, put Wolf Point ahead 42-27 at the half.

The Wolves gained a 49-32 on a hoop by Garfield off a pass from Jaylee Azure in the third quarter, but Poplar responded with a three-pointer by Mattie Fallsdown, five points by Emma Rae Martell and a free throw by Kessee Erickson to cut the gap to 5141.

A three-pointer by Azure helped Wolf Point hold a 5545 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Poplar’s Nordwick connected from three-point range and the Indians fought back to 57-52 with 6:46 remaining in the contest.

The Wolves bounced back with drives by MacDonald and Campbell for a 61-52 lead with 4:40 left. After a baseline shot by Martell at the 3:33 mark, the Wolves increased the margin to 66-54 on a free throw by Azure, a basket by Garfield and a drive by Campbell.

Fallsdown fired in a three-pointer with 1:54 left, but the Wolves worked the clock the rest of the way for the 11-point victory.

Wolf Point’s top scorers were Campbell with 16, Hamilton with 14, Garfield with 12 and Azure with 11. Also scoring were Kolstad with seven, St. Marks with four, MacDonald with two and Haidyn Raining Bird with two.

Allie Azure scored the last four point of the first quarter to put Poplar ahead by a 16-13 margin.

The Wolves accounted for the first 10 points of the second period on five points by Campbell, four points by Hamilton and a free throw by Garfield for a 23-16 lead.

A drive by Fallsdown and three-pointer by Nordwick put the Indians ahead 2624 midway into the second quarter.
