Wolf Point’s wrestlers competed at the Eagle Invitational in Sidney on Friday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 4.

The Wolves teamed up with Forysth and competed in the dual meet on Friday. Joli Beston had a record of 0-3 against boys. “She was in on a few good shots and finished a couple pretty good,” Wolf Point coach Scott Vandall said.

Maddox Reum had a record of 0-3 in the duals. “He did better then I thought he would. He didn’t wrestle last year and he had to get the rust off,” Vandall said. He suffered a slight injury and was kept out of matches.

Jordan Davis went 1-2 in the duals. “He wrestled a state champ from Colstrip. He didn’t win but gained some valuable insight,” Vandall said.

Mason Garfield went 3-0 in the duals. “Mason wrestled well. He worked on some things and got going,” Vandall said.

Chance Smith had one match at 285 pounds on Friday. He wrestled well but lost the match.

“I was happy with some things. They know what they need to improve on,” Vandall said.

During the tournament portion, Beston wrested in the girls’ brackets at 132-138. She had a first-round bye. Then Saturday, she went 2-2. “She went out there and did a lot of good things. She wrestled a state champ from Sidney that she has wrestled in the past. She didn’t get the win but she got half way through the third period,” Vandall said. “She made a couple little mistakes and against good kids you can’t do that.”

Beston injured her knee in her consolation semi match and didn’t wrestle her final match. “Joli has improved a lot from last year. There’s a lot of improvement there. We will get into the wrestling and get some things fixed.”

Davis wrestled well, but he hurt his shoulder a bit. He went 0-2 in the JV meet. “He was doing good, but the shoulder was too much to battle through, but he tried,” Vandall said.

Smith posted a 2-1 record in the JV meet. “He took second, lost the championship by one point,” Vandall said. “I saw a different Chance this weekend. He got after it. We were very happy to see this Chance. If he wrestles like that in practice (which he will now), he will be hard to beat.”

Garfield wrestled in the varsity brackets and placed fourth. “He had a good tournament. We lost to a familiar kid from Huntley Project in the semis in overtime,” Vandall said. “Man that was the best I’ve seen Mason wrestle that kid. We will see that match a few more times this year. Mason lost the match for third and fourth to a kid from Illinois, 5-1. Mason had a good weekend.”

The coach feels the tournament was a great way to open the season.

“This meet is harder than state that’s for sure. We had Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska, Washington, North Dakota and Idaho teams,” Vandall said. “This one was a meat grinder like usual. There were no easy matches this weekend. Mason has just some little things to clean up and we’ll be rock solid.”

The Wolves will have a home mixer on Thursday, Dec. 9, and then travel to Glasgow on Friday, Dec. 10, and Saturday, Dec. 11.
