Wolf Point’s wrestling program looks to make some noise this high school season with several standouts returning to the mats.

Heading the list is Mason Garfield who placed sixth at the Class B state meet last season.

Garfield wrestled at 182 pounds last season and will likely compete at 205 pounds this campaign.

“We’re looking at him to do even better,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “I’m thinking top three at state.”

Chance Smith is also back after qualifying for the state meet last season. He will also likely wrestle at 205 pounds.

“He’s quick and strong,” Vandall said. “He has a good chance to be on the podium.”

At the first day of practice, the Wolves’ boys’ squad also included Jordan Davis, Maddux Reum and freshman Michael Bell. Vandall said he feels that Davis can do some damage this season.

Reum, who will wrestle at either 132 or 138 pounds, has the ability to qualify for the state meet.

Bell enjoyed success at the junior high and AAU ranks. He is coming off a solid football season for the Wolves.

Vandall said a couple of other students are still considering to join the team.

“I’m pretty excited because we have a full season back again,” Vandall said.

On the girls’ side, both Joli Beston and Samantha Reed return for Wolf Point.

Beston placed second at the girls’ all-class state meet last season.

“She had a taste of it last year,” Vandall said. “She’s determined to take state and has a good chance of it.”

Reed accounted for a 2-2 record at the state meet last season.

“I think she has a good chance of placing in the top three,” Vandall said.

Vandall is being assistant by Maestro Martinez, who was a three-time state champion.

The Wolves will open their season at the Eagle Invitational in Sidney on Dec. 3-4. Wolf Point will then travel to Circle on Dec. 7 and host a mixer on Dec. 9. A tournament is scheduled in Glasgow on Dec. 10-11.

“We have some good competition from the start,” Vandall said. “It will be a gut buster for sure.”
