Wolf Point’s girls’ basketball squad began practicing under the guidance of new head coach Frank Benson on Thursday, Nov. 18.

Benson, who coached Dodson’s boys last season, has been impressed with the players’ attitudes at open gyms during the past few weeks.

“They are working hard and are really excited to be here,” Benson said. “I’m overjoyed and excited.” The list of returning players for the Lady Wolves includes All-Conference performer J’Elle Garfield.

Other athletes back with starting experience are senior Hamyanie Campbell, senior Josie Kolstad, senior Jaylee Azure, junior Katelyn MacDonald and sophomore Sierra Hamilton.

“We have a lot coming back,” Benson said. “They have a good fundamental foundation.”

Benson feels that area fans will enjoy watching the girls play against a tough slate of opponents.

“We like to press and push the ball up the floor,” Benson said. “We like to attack the defense.”

On defense, fans can expect the Wolves to play manto- man and use traps. “I’m slowing into it,” Benson said of teaching the girls his game style. “I’m doing little things that they need to fix.”

Assistant coaches are Marianne Zilkoski Rees and Jeromy Azure Sr.

The Wolves will open their season with a home contest against Glasgow on Friday, Sept. 3.

Wolf Point will face Shepherd and St. Labre during the Lockwood Invitational on Dec. 10-11.

“My philosophy is we need to take care of ourselves,” Benson said of preparing for opponents.
