Winning a conference game and accomplishing the feat at home were certainly reasons to celebrate for Wolf Point’s football program on Friday, Oct. 15.

“It’s been a while,” Wolf Point Coach Anthony Red Cloud said after the 43-18 victory over Conrad. “It’s a big conference win too.”

After leading by a 24-12 half-time score and by only a 24-18 margin early in the third quarter, the Wolves dominated play the rest of the way. The win kept Wolf Point’s playoff hopes alive heading into their season finale contest at home against Glasgow on Friday, Oct. 22.

“The boys played tough,” Red Cloud said. “They played hard for all four quarters.”

Ahead by just a 24-18 margin, the Wolves marched 56 yards to gain a two-score advantage. The running of Corey Martell highlighted the drive, but the Wolves reached the end zone when fullback Charlie Page went through a large hole created by the Wolves’ offensive linemen for a 14-yard score to put Wolf Point up 30-18 with 2:26 left in the third quarter.

Conrad was able to drive into Wolf Point territory on its next possession, but two straight incompletions ended the threat at the 43.

After runs by Martell, Mason Garfield and Page put the ball at the Cowboy 29, Page broke loose again for a touchdown to increase the margin to 36-18 with 9:14 remaining.

Conrad responded by driving deep into Wolf Point territory, but Gaige Bushman intercepted a pass at the four and returned the ball to the Cowboy 44.

“That was huge,” Red Cloud said of the interception. “A score there would have kept them in the game.”

The Cowboys’ next possession was stopped on a sack and a quarterback pressure by Garfield.

Wolf Point’s final touchdown came on a 21-yard dash by Martell. Juliun Benson kicked the conversion for a 43-18 lead with 1:52 remaining.

Benson finished with 127 yards rushing and 58 yards passing.

“He had a nice game. He threw the ball well and ran it when needed,” Red Cloud said.

Martell accounted for 141 yards on 13 carries while Page finished with 66 rushing yards.

Defensive standouts for the Wolves included linebackers Michael Bell, Page, Martell and Hunter Raining Bird.

Conrad’s Kolter Savik, a 229-pound senior fullback, finished with 158 yards on 19 carries.

The Wolves struck first when Benson took off on a scramble and raced 62 yards for a touchdown with 10:19 left in the first quarter.

The Cowboys tied the contest, 6-6, on a seven-yard dash by Roper Mycke on a fourth-down play with 3:26 remaining in the period.
