The Wolf Point School District has started a new program that has area elementary school students finding new role models in the community.
The Little Wolves program has athletes from the high school spending time with students at Northside Elementary School. Both volleyball and football players have been involved. Last week, Wolf Point’s football players spent lunch time and recess with the younger students on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
Wolf Point Activities Director Eric Peterson says several school officials have worked to develop the program. He feels that it benefits all ages as the older students should take on more of a leadership role as role models for their younger buddies.
“We will tweak it as we go,” Peterson said. “Whatever works, we will expand on it.”
The elementary students were delighted to wear the football players’ jerseys and take part in the pre-game meal on Thursday, Oct. 14.
“I think it could be really good,” football coach Anthony Red Cloud said of the program. “The high school kids had a great time at Northside.”
The elementary students even had their own seating section during the game on Friday, Oct. 15.
Frank Benson, who is an assistant football coach and head girls’ basketball coach, also sees many benefits from the program.
“They look up to those kids,” Benson said. “These kids are excited about football again.”
Benson expects the program to continue during basketball seasons. One of his ideas is to have the elementary students take turns being ballboys or ballgirls.
