Poplar had its first home volleyball match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Indians dropped the match against conference rival Malta by a 16-25, 9-25, 9-25, final.

“Our serving was decent,” Poplar Coach William Bemer said. “Our digs were pretty good.”

The players still need to work on communication and trusting each other.

“We’re very young,” Bemer said.

Emma Martell led the Indians with 10 digs and two aces.

Kessee Erickson scored five kills. Morgan Nordwick had three blocks.

Rebecca Gorder accounted for three assists.

In the first set, Malta earned a 23-12 advantage.

Poplar battled back to 23-16 before Malta tallied the final two points.

The Indians trailed by only an 8-6 margin in the second set, but Malta ran off the next seven points.

A point on Martell’s service cut the gap to 15-8.

The hard serving of Lauren Tuss led Malta to a 24-8 advantage. After a block by Poplar’s Madison Dehner, Malta scored the last point for a 25-9 final.

The M’ettes jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the third set. Malta increased the margin to 11-2 until a hit by Kylie Gourneau pulled Poplar to 11-3.

An ace by Gourneau and a kill by Dehner kept the Indians fairly close at 17-6.

Ahead by a 21-9 margin, Malta accounted for the match’s final four points.

Poplar will host Wolf Point on Thursday, Sept. 16, and Glasgow on Saturday, Sept. 18.
