The goal of two area men became a reality when the Brown Coulee Mud Drags took place just outside of Wolf Point on Saturday, July 31.

Eldon Porras III and Cody Weinberger have been involved in mud races for several years and started to brainstorm how to hold such an event in the Wolf Point area.

“Cody Weinberger and I are into this, and me and my wife have the land here,” Porras explained between races on Saturday. “We’ve been preparing for this for a couple of years.”

Weinberger explained his interest in cars started at a young age when he watched his father worked on vehicles.

“He would spend hours in our garage, mastering his craft,” Weinberger said. “He competed in mud racing competitions as well, which instilled a passion in me for cars at a young age.”

He doesn’t think mud racing competitions have happened on the Fort Peck Reservation in more than 20 years.

“I figured it was time to bring them back,” Weinberger said. “I’ve been trying to do an event for the last five years, but many obstacles have been thrown our way. I’m glad we were able to finally host the event and I hope they continue and grow for years to come.”

Porras added that he became interested in mud drags so he would spend time with his father and son.

They have participated in competitions in Plentywood and Glasgow.

“We have to travel out of town to do it and now we are able to bring the action to Wolf Point and provide entertainment for all ages,” Porras said.

The Brown Coulee Mud Drags attracted drivers from Williston, Glasgow, Poplar, Wolf Point and Culbertson. There were 12 total entries.

“It would not have been possible without a lot of hard work and support from our sponsors,” Porras said.

The hard work included digging the pits, lining up the tracks and adding a lot of water.

The four classes were stock, super stock, modified and open.

“We’ve been wanting to do it for quite a while,” Ashley Porras said. “We hope to make it an annual event.”

First-place winners on Saturday included Jaden Bowen of Williston for stock, Bucky Heckmun of Culbertson for modified and open, and Weinberger for super stock.
