Wolves Enjoy Memorable Track Season

Wolves Enjoy Memorable Track Season Wolves Enjoy Memorable Track Season

Traditionally, it seems like track and field athletes receive less recognition than standouts in other sports such as basketball and football. But the accomplishments made by Wolf Point’s athletes this past track season were certainly impressive.

After all, how many times can a program boast of having double champions from a state track meet? Zander Ackerman’s feat of finishing first in both the 1600 and 3200 was exciting to watch. In the 3200, he stayed right on the heels of Thompson Falls’ Justin Morgan lap after lap until sprinting away on the final lap to the delight of Wolf Point’s faithful. Ackerman, who placed second in the 800, finished his high school career with school records in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

Jewel Olson, meanwhile, earned state titles in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Both were tight races, but Olson displayed the strength to outlast her closest competition.

She was a great, steady leader for the Lady Wolves all season long and her character and attitude were certainly commendable. I won’t soon forget her relay run at the divisional meet when she received the baton in a distant seventh place and ended up crossing the finish line first.

Seniors Austin Wilson and Kaholo Toves weren’t able to earn honors at the state meet, but they each enjoyed strong season for the Wolves. Wilson was one of the top sprinters in the division, but he was slowed with an injury at the state competition. Toves was a standout in both the long jump and sprints.

The season will be remembered with Wolf Point’s boys winning the district title and placing second at the divisional meet. Those type of accomplishments should be goals for future track athletes in Wolf Point.

Although the Wolves will definitely miss this year’s strong senior class, the future does look solid. Freshman Peyton Summers placed fifth in the 3200 and took seventh in the 1600. Look out for him next track and cross country seasons. Katelyn McDonald earned fourth in the javelin at the state meet and only gets better and better. Mason Garfield has ability to be one of the top male athletes next year in weight events. Hamyanie Campbell should be one of the top girls in distance runs next spring.

This year was truly special and memorable. Hopefully, we have more like it in the upcoming years.
