Tester Discusses Combating Drugs In State

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., recapped how he is helping eastern Montana through legislation on the topics of combating drugs and Amtrak’s service.

During a press conference with Montana reporters, Tester mentioned how he and Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., teamed up for the Assisting Narcotics and Trafficking Officers in Interdicting Drugs Act to increase resources for three law enforcement programs — High Intensity Drug Task Forces, Community Oriented Policing Services and Operation Stonegarden — that support law enforcement efforts to combat the drug epidemic and boost border security.

Tester understands the amount of drugs that come from the southern border, but he explained that Montana’s northern border with Canada covers 550 miles. He said three people were recently arrested for having about 200 pounds of illegal drugs in backpacks.

The senator noted that border patrol must have the resources needed to protect Montana’s residents.

Tester is pleased the Amtrak’s Empire Builder resumed full-time service last week throughout the state. Tester’s legislation reversing cuts in service was included in the American Rescue Plan. “From Wolf Point to Libby, it will allow people to stay connected with families and business,” Tester said of Amtrak’s full service. “I got to work and was able to fix it, working with people along the Hi-Line.”

As far as when mask restrictions will be lifted for travel, Tester mentioned watching maskless fans at NBA arenas during a TV broadcast.

“It’s a good sign,” the senator said.

He mentioned that even when restrictions are lifted, people should still feel comfortable wearing masks if they desire. He urged residents to get vaccinated.

“It’s just a matter of time,” Tester said of having more restrictions lifted.

In his closing, Tester urged people to keep those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country during this Memorial Day time.
