Jewel Olson was ready to run. The Wolf Point senior was ready to win a state championship.

The 400-meter dash was the final event of the day at the Class B state track meet in Laurel on Friday, May 28. Too make matters a bit more unique, a storm pushed the 3200 and 400 runs back two hours later than scheduled.

“I think it helped with my stress,” Olson said about the delay. “I got to hang out with my friends. It relaxed me.”

When the girls made their way from the check-in point to the starting line for the 400, the other Class B sprinters walked. It was Olson who jogged ahead of the group as if she was a boxer ready to win her crown.

“I wanted to make sure I was warmed up,” Olson said of her approach.

She never looked back as she won the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 58.34 seconds. Manhattan’s Madeline Severson was right behind at 58.68 seconds.

Immediately after the race, Olson wasn’t able to quite realize yet what she accomplished.

“I haven’t really believed that I’ve won,” Olson told reporters near the finish line. “I had really good competition. My coaches really motivated me.”

The next day, Olson was tested again. In a tight race, Olson earned the 200-meter championship with a time of 26.03 seconds. The time was a school record that she originally broke during Friday’s trials.

Sweat Grass’ Alyssa Boshart was second at 26.1 seconds.

Olson felt her endurance helped her win both titles.

She is proud to bring the titles back to Wolf Point.

“It just shows anybody can do it,” Olson said. “Anybody can do it, if they put their mind to it and decide to do their best.”

Olson earned the sixthplace medal in the 100 with a time of 13.53 seconds.

Wolf Point’s girls finished with 25 points for ninth place. Sweet Grass County took first with 67 points followed by Manhattan with 62 and Huntley Project with 59 points.
