After three legs of the 1600-meter relay race at the Northern B divisional track meet Saturday, May 22, no one thought Wolf Point’s girls had a chance to finish in first place.

The Wolves were in seventh place and quite a distance away from the leading two runners.

Again, no one thought they had a hope for first place. No one except for one person.

“I didn’t know what I was thinking,” Wolf Point’s senior standout Jewel Olson said about her goal when grabbing the baton. “I just thought I needed to get ahead of the other girls.”

Olson ended up passing six runners, including two in the final 50 meters, as an amazed crowd cheered her crossing the finish line.

The winning time was 4.23.65. Olson’s split was 59.1 seconds.

The other relay members Josie Kolstad, Katelyn Mac-Donald and Hamyanie Campbell said they were hoping that Olson could just finish in the top six so they could qualify for the state meet.

She did a little better than that.

“She came in clutch,” Kolstad said. “We definitely needed it.”

The relay heroics came after Olson had already finished first during three individual sprints at the divisional meet.

The senior’s winning times were 13.52 seconds in the 100-meter, 26.68 seconds in the 200 and 60.49 seconds in the 400.

Wolf Point’s girls placed fifth with 55 points. Malta won the divisional title with 99 points followed by Conrad with 83.5, Choteau with 65.5 and Glasgow with 62.5 points.

MacDonald earned second place in the javelin with a mark of 110-0.

Campbell finished fifth in the 3200 at 13:18.67 and sixth in the 1600 at 5:57.14.

The 400-meter relay team featuring MacDonald, Kylie Rodenberg, Kolstad and Olson finished fourth at 54.19 seconds.
