The word was out, it was going to come down to the final three events to decide the District 2B boys’ track championship. Heading into the discus, 200-meter dash and 1600-meter relay, Wolf Point and Glasgow were deadlocked as far as team points.

The Wolves moved slightly ahead when junior Mason Garfield placed third and an athlete from Glasgow took fifth in the discus.

When the 200-meter dash happened, however, the Wolves put the title away as seniors Austin Wilson and Kaholo Toves finished first and second in the sprint. Wilson had a time of 23.53 seconds while Toves finished in 23.81 seconds. The times were personal records for each runner.

“I was nervous,” Wilson said of knowing how important the race was for the team outcome.

Toves, who took first in the long jump (19-07) earlier in the day, added, “I was kind of confident. I felt good.”

To end the day with a bang, the 1600-meter relay team featuring Wilson, Toves, August SpottedWolf and Zander Ackerman finished first with a time of 3:40.51.

Wolf Point won the title with 165 points while Glasgow took second with 142 points. Rounding out the team standings were Malta with 106, Harlem with 52 and Poplar with 51.

Ackerman and Wilson were each multiple winners for the Wolves.

Ackerman, a senior, finished first in the 800 (2:04.93), first in the 1600 (4:37.47) and first in the 3200 (10:11.85).

Along with earning first in the 200, Wilson was the winner in the 100 (11.7) and 400 (53.33).

The 400-meter relay team consisting of Toves, Garfield, Maddox Reum and Wilson cruised to top honors with a time of 45.94 seconds.

Peyton Summers, a freshman, placed second in the 3200 (10:11.85) and 1600 (4:49.64). His time in the 3200 qualified him for the state meet.

“I told you,” Ackerman cheerfully yelled at Summers after hearing Summers’ state-qualifying time in the 3200.

Summers replied, “Thank you, thank you.”

Garfield placed second in the shot put (43-3) and third in the discus (120-08).

Other Wolf Point athletes placing third included Toves in the 100 (11.91), August Spotted Wolf in the 800 (2:13.68), Kholby SpottedWolf in the 3200 (10:40.94) and Ackerman clearing 5-4 in the high jump.

Ethan Blount finished fourth in the 3200 (10:46.69), fourth in the 1600 (4:52.49) and sixth in the 800 (2:14.37).

K. SpottedWolf took fifth in the 1600 at 4:54.63. Summers placed fifth in the 800 at 2:14.31.

The Wolves will compete at the divisional meet in Glasgow on Saturday, May 22.
