When there’s a game to be won or a race to finish for the Wolf Point Wolves, Hamyanie Campbell has been leading the way this sports campaign.

Campbell has competed for the school’s cross-country, volleyball, basketball and track programs in an extremely busy junior year.

During the fall, Campbell participates in both cross country and volleyball for Wolf Point.

“It was hard, but it was fun,” Campbell said of playing two sports in one season. “I’m glad my coaches were willing to work with me.”

She often practiced for cross country during the mornings and then with the volleyball squad in the afternoons. She ended up earning a spot on the Wolves’ tournament team for volleyball.

In cross country, Campbell finished in 31st place at the Class B state meet as a junior after taking 37th as a sophomore.

“I was probably the third girl in our district,” she said. “I really like cross country. It feels like a family with the guys.”

During the winter, she provided great spark and was a starting guard for the Lady Wolves.

She explains that she feels playing a team sport like basketball is beneficial to her. “I learn to work with others and not to get mad at myself or them,” Campbell said.

She especially enjoys pregame in basketball as the players prepare for the upcoming contest. She is often the one that leads the Wolves during a pre-game prayer. “I guess it’s because I’m not shy,” Campbell said of the prayer.

On the court, highlights included a 23-point performance at Poplar and a 22-point game against Harlem.

Still, she likes the defensive side of the game better than scoring points. She loves coming up with steals and creating turnovers.

This track season, Campbell is off to a strong start as she has placed at both the Glasgow Invitational and Wibaux Invitational. Her events include the 1600-meter run, 3200-meter run and 1600-meter relay.

She finished 12th in the 3200 at the state meet as a freshman. “I like the longer distances more than the shorter distances,” Campbell explained.

Her goal for this track season is to place in the top 10 at the Class B state meet.

Besides athletics, Campbell serves in other leadership roles including being the junior class president and acting as the National Honor Society’s vice president. Her grade point average ranks her second in her class.

Even in the summer, she stays active with recreation. She is the head lifeguard at the swimming pool and plays softball.
