Lady Wolves See Season End At Tourney
The season for Wolf Point’s girls’ basketball squad came to a heart-breaking end as the Wolves lost to Harlem, 40-37, during tournament action in Poplar on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Trailing 29-26 entering the fourth quarter, the Wolves battled back to 31-30 on baskets by Sierra Hamilton and Hailey Nelson.
After two free throws by Harlem’s Vanise Little with 4:48 left, Hamilton scored at the 4:32 mark and Jayle Azure then hit two free throws to put the Wolves up 34-33 with 3:12 remaining.
Wolf Point increased its lead to 36-33 when Hamilton, a 5-10 freshman, scored off a pass from Azure with 2:11 left.
A hoop by Taya Trottier, after a steal, cut the margin to 36-35. After a free throw by Josie Kolstad, the Wildcats tied the game, 37-37, on a drive by Trottier with 47 seconds left.
After the Wolves turned the ball over, Harlem went ahead to stay on a three-pointer by Trottier with seven seconds left.
Azure and Hamilton led the Wolves with nine points each. Also scoring were Kolstad with six, J’Elle Garfield with five, Hamyanie Campbell with four, Nelson with two and Jodi Houg with two.
Leading Harlem were Trottier with 17 and Alaynee Hawley with 10 points.
The Wildcats led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter and 21-17 at the half.
Malta defeated Glasgow, 58-53, in the district tournament’s championship game.
After Glasgow led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, Malta gained a 29-28 half-time advantage. Malta increased its lead to 46-41 in the third quarter.
Top scorers for Malta were Maddie Williamson with 16 and Addy Anderson with 14 points.
