District 2B Tournaments Begin In Area

Roosevelt County is the place to be for Class B basketball this week as Wolf Point will host the District 2B boys’ basketball tournament and Poplar will host the District 2B girls’ basketball tourney. Action begins on Thursday, Feb. 25.

The boys’ tournament will begin with Wolf Point facing Poplar at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Poplar’s girls will battle Harlem at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Other games on Thursday will include Harlem taking on Glasgow at 7 p.m. in the boys’ tournament, and Glasgow meeting Wolf Point at 7 p.m. in the girls’ tournament held in Poplar.

Malta is the top-seed of both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments.

The championship games are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Wolf Point’s boys ended ended their regular season with home league losses to Glasgow and Malta.

The Wolves lost to Glasgow by a 66-59 final on Friday, Feb. 19.

Glasgow gained a 20-14 lead in the first quarter and led 52-42 after three quarters of play.

Antone Manning scored 17 points to lead the Wolves. Also reaching double figures were Gaige Bushman with 13, Zander Ackerman with 10 and Corey Martell with 10. Kelby Bauer added nine points.

Keigan Skolrud scored 32 points to lead Glasgow.

The Wolves fell to Malta by a 47-30 final on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Malta earned a 13-6 advantage in the first quarter and was ahead by a 20-13 halftime margin.

Martell and Manning each scored 11 points to lead the Wolves. Bushman added eight and Ackerman scored two points.

Wolf Point’s girls also lost to Glasgow and Malta in the regular season’s final weekend.

Wolf Point put up a strong battle before losing to the Scotties by a 36-33 final The Lady Wolves lost to Malta by a 62-37 final on Saturday, Feb. 20. Malta jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and led by a 36-12 half-time margin.

Top scorers for the Wolves were J’Elle Garfield with 13 and Jaylee Azure with nine.

Also scoring were Katelyn MacDonald with five, Josie Kolstad with four, Hamyanie Campbell with three and Hailey Nelson with three.

Poplar’s girls’ basketball team fell short against Harlem, 68-61, on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Harlem took a 19-12 lead in the first quarter.

“We played pretty even with them during the last three quarters,” Poplar Coach Teri Christian said. “I think things are coming together. The ladies will be ready to hit the tournament running!”

Top scorers for Poplar included Morgen Nordwick with 14, Macey Dionne with 13, Keandra Martell with 10, Rikki Belton with seven, Allie Azure with three and Kessee Erickson with two points.

The top four teams of the district tournaments will advance to the divisional level the following week.
