Poplar Falls Short In League Contests

Poplar lost conference basketball games against Glasgow, Harlem and Malta during the week.

The Indians dropped two close league contests in Glasgow on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Glasgow’s boys fought off Poplar by a 59-56 final.

After Poplar took a 14-10 lead in the first quarter, the half ended in a 27-27 deadlock.

Glasgow led 42-37 after three quarters of play.

Poplar’s Joe Bear finished with 25 points.

Wilfred Lambert added 16 points.

Also scoring were Inyan Growing Thunder with eight, Dennis Red Eagle with six and William Youngman with one.

Leading Glasgow were Keigan Skolrud with 18, Hunter Collinsworth with 12 and Bergen Miller with 12.

Glasgow’s girls broke away in the second half to beat Poplar by a 59-46 final.

Glasgow led 16-9 in the first quarter and 29-22 at the half.

The Scotties increased their lead to 47-31 in the third quarter.

Poplar was behind by only seven points with 1:47 remaining in the contest.

“We had some crucial turnovers and sent them to the line,” Poplar Coach Teri Christian said.

Top scorers for Poplar included Keandra Martell with 13 and Macey Dionne with 12.

Also scoring were Teagan Escarcega with nine, Morgen Nordwick with seven, Jazmyn Carrywater with three and Courtney Spotted Wolf with two.

Leading Glasgow were Daley Aune with 22, Abrianna Nielsen with 15 and Mann Alexys with 13 points.

Poplar’s boys basketball team was outscored by a 92-87 margin in Harlem on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

After trailing most of the game, the Indians got as close as 90-87 on the scoring of Joe Bear and Wilfred Lambert in the final seconds.

Two free throws by Harlem put the margin at five points.

Dennis Red Eagle led the Indians with 20 points.

Poplar’s girls lost by a 61-55 final at Harlem.

Top scorers for the Indians were Keandra Martell with 25 points and Macey Dionne with 15 points.

Poplar’s boys fell at Malta, 65-44, on Friday, Feb. 12.

Malta took a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and was ahead 32-18 at the half.

Top scorers for the Indians were Wilfred Lamber with 15 and Joe Bear with 12 points.

Rounding out Poplar’s scoring were Delray Lilly with six, Inyan Growing Thunder with five, Geordy Medicine Cloud with three, Preston Ogle with two and Elijah Grey Bear with one.

Leading the Mustangs were Rex Williamson with 20 and Connor Tuss with 18 points.

Poplar’s girls lost by a 72-30 final in Malta.

“It wasn’t our girl,” Christian said. “It was our fourth game in five days.”

Top scorers for the Indians were Escarcega with seven, Rikki Belton with six and Gracelyn Medicine Cloud with five.

The Indians will host Harlem on Friday, Feb. 20.
