Wrestlers Compete Well In Colstrip

Wolf Point’s wrestlers competed under the lights in Colstrip on Friday, Jan. 22.

With limited at athletes, the Wolves took six wrestlers. “The kids worked hard. We had some good things happen and we made some learning mistakes,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “In all, we were happy with what we saw.”

Joli Beston wrestles at 132. She lost both matches to upper class boys one from Colstrip and one from Huntley. “She did a good job being aggressive,” Vandall said. “She was in on a good shot just stopped. We were hoping to get a match with the girl from Huntley but she was not able to be their this week. She is making good progress. She if very content in herself and it’s start to show.”

Xavier Kemp wrestles at 138. He had two opponents from Colstrip. “Xavier did a good job in both matches. He lost to an upper class man in each match. Xavier was right in the last match, we were getting up off the bottom pretty easy. He just keep getting ran out of bounds. He is learning,” Vandall said. “It a big change for him this year as a freshman facing juniors and seniors. He is just a few moves away from getting the big win.”

At 182 pounds, Josh Bushman did well as he wrestled an opponent from Huntley that was in the 205 pound weight class. “He handled the match well. The bigger kid was able to get on top of us in a scramble,” Vandall said. “Josh fought off his back great, but the weight advantage just wasn’t in his favor.”

Mason Garfield wrestles at 182 pounds as well. Garfield also wrestled up one weight class. “He won his match at 205. We also had a rematch from a couple years ago. We had one of the two kids at in the state at 182 from Huntley,” Vandall said. “We were right on the first round but gave up a last-second take down. The we were moving pretty good off the bottom and got caught in something pretty tight. We are very happy with this match. We got the first take down pretty easy. I think Mason is stronger then him. We will see him again at divisionals and he can take the long ride.”

Chance Smith wrestles at 205 pounds. Smith got hurt in his match and was unable to continue. He is OK and will be back next week. “Chance had by far his best week in the practice room. He is making some good progress,” Vandall noted.

Charlie Page wrestled at heavyweight. “Charlie gives up some weight to these kids, but he holds his own. He had a kid from Huntley that caught Charlie in a roll,” Vandall said. “He had a lot of weight on him. We got some sweet revenge on the kid the next round. Charlie came out with some attitude. He got the take down, then got the pin. The first match left a bad taste in Charlie’s mouth and it showed the next match. We need Charlie to be that aggressive for the rest of the year.”

The Wolves will host a mixer starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21. “I hope we can get a good crowd of home town support this week. As we have our second and last home mixer,” Vandall said.
