Wolf Point’s boys basketball coach Troy Blount said positive progress is being accomplished during the first few weeks of practice.

“I’m excited,” Blount said prior to the team’s scrimmage on Saturday, Dec. 19. “It’s a fresh new season.”

The Wolf Point boys basketball team enter the campaign with the goal of repeating as district champions. Practice began Monday, Dec. 7.

“We do have a good group of young players who are committed and coachable,” Blount said.

Wolf Point has a strong recent past with the 2020 district title and coming a buzzer shot away from winning the 2019 district championship.

“We’re looking to repeat,” Blount said. “We have some young, hustling players.” Experience isn’t a strength as the Wolves lost six seniors off of last year’s squad. Antoine Manning, a senior, is the only returning player with a good deal of varsity playing time.

“He got some valuable varsity minutes last year,” Blount said. “We’re going to be young.”

Quickness is expected to be one of Wolf Point’s strengths.

“We’re fairly small, but we make up for it with speed,” Blount said.

The Wolves will use their quickness to play an up-tempo game. “We will be getting up and down the court,” Blount added. “We have a solid core of young guys.”

He doesn’t see a clear favorite in the league heading the season.

“It’s usually pretty wide open,” Blount said.

The Wolves have their season opener at home against Dodson on Saturday, Jan. 2.
