After winning a game at the divisional tournament last season, the Lustre Christian Lions are shooting for another strong boys’ basketball season this time around.

The Lions are enjoying a great turnout with 17 players out for the sport.

“It’s probably as many as we have in the past 20 years or more,” Coach Randy Reddig said of the turnout.

Returning starters for the Lions include junior Kaleb Hoversland, junior Kolden Hoversland and senior Braeden Toavs. Kolden Hoversland was an All-State selection last year.

Sophomore Elijah Lenihan also saw a good amount of playing time during his freshman year.

“We lost a lot of size from last year,” Reddig said.

After having two standouts at 6-7 and 6-5 last season, Lustre’s tallest player is 6-3 this campaign.

“We will probably be a little more up-tempo,” Reddig said.

Although the team doesn’t feature the much experience, the coach likes the players’ attitudes. “I’m excited,” he said.

He sees defending state co-champion as the league favorite.

“I think it’s pretty wide open after that,” Reddig said.

The Lions will open their season at home against Bainville on Friday, Jan. 8.
