The Lustre Christian girls’ basketball team enters the season with a new coach and seven players excited about the campaign.

Bill Reddig is the program’s new head coach.

“So far, I like it,” Reddig said of the duties.

One challenge though is with only seven girls in the program, practices can be difficult. Some days, Reddig has younger boys to come in and scrimmage. The program consists of two seniors, four freshmen and one eighth-grader.

The Lions return five players including three starters from last season’s squad.

Senior Tiara Whitmus and freshman Alexa Reddig each started last year. The other returning players, senior Ashley O’Hara, freshman Grace Brown and freshman Aubri Holzrichter, started at times during 2019-2020.

Reddig earned All-Conference honors last year.

“Our strong point will be their willingness to give 100 percent,” Coach Reddig said. “They don’t give up.”

He noted three of the girls played a lot as eighthgraders last season should the future looks promising for Lustre.

The squad doesn’t feature a great deal of height as Brown is the tallest at 5-10.

The lack of players is also a concern.

“I would love to do more pressure, but we can’t because of lack of numbers,” Coach Reddig said.

He sees North Country as the league favorite heading into the season. “Scobey is always tough.”

The Lions will open their season at home against Bainville on Friday, Jan. 8.
