With a turnout of 24 wrestlers, the Poplar Indians should field a solid squad this wrestling season.

“It’s a good turnout for us,” Poplar Coach Jason Frederick said.

The Indians return two standouts who placed at the Class B state meet last season. Jase Frederick earned fourth at 113 pounds and Jacob Berger took fourth at 205 pounds. Berger will wrestle at heavyweight this season.

Other Poplar wrestlers back who qualified for the state meet last season include senior Logan Boadle and junior Mitchell Youngman.

Overall, there are nine returning wrestlers on the squad.

This year, girls will compete with the team until the divisional meet. There will be a separate state meet for girls at the end of the season.

Poplar’s program features three girls including junior Jazmyn Gorder, who came one match away from qualifying for state last year.

The squad includes seven freshmen.

“Everybody here has wrestled except for one male and two females,” Coach Frederick said. “I’m excited.”

The coach is also pleased to have someone able to wrestle at the 103-pound class. Freshman Landon Young will have that assignment.

“It’s one of my bigger teams and have the most returning wrestlers,” Coach Frederick said.

The Indians will open their season with a mixer in Circle on Saturday, Jan. 9.
