Froid/Lake Loses Tourney’s First-round Contest

 

The Froid/Lake Red Hawks fell short by a 53-45 margin against a strong Scobey squad in the first round of the Eastern C boys’ basketball tournament in Glasgow on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

After falling behind by a 21-11 margin midway into the second quarter, the Red Hawks battled back on a three-pointer by Landon Kelm and a three-point play by Mason Dethman. Froid/ Lake trailed by a 23-17 halftime score.

Scobey’s Bram Handran fired in a three-pointer to put the Spartans ahead by a 33-23 advantage with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

The Red Hawks responded with a pair of free throws by Nate Stentoft and a drive by Dethman. A three-point play by Dethman ended the quarter at 37-30.

The scoring of sophomore Cooper Axtman led the Spartans to a 48-34 lead with 3:53 remaining. Dethman then accounted for another threepoint play to keep the Red Hawks’ hopes alive. A drive by Dethman and a fastbreak hoop by Stentoft off a pass from Dethman pulled the Red Hawks to 50-41 with 1:18 remaining.

The Red Hawks got as close as 51-45 on a basket by Dethman with 14 seconds left.

Dethman led the Red Hawks with 23 points. Kelm and Stentoft added 10 points each. Daniel Forizs scored two points.

Dethman finished with 10 rebounds.

Leading Scobey were Braxton Wolfe with 17, Handran with 16 and Axtman with 14 points. Axtman grabbed eight rebounds.
