Solem Serves Solid Role In Culbertson

Senior Profile
Culbertson High School senior Carson Solem keeps busy with sports and other activities at the school.
Along with being a three-sport athlete, Solem is a member of FFA and vice president of the student council.
In FFA, Solem has competed in livestock judging, agricultural sales and agronomy.
He said that sales is his favorite competition. “You get to negotiate,” Solem noted.
His experience in FFA might come in handy down the road. After high school, he plans to a study for a career with John Deere. He worked for C& B Operations during the summer.
“I really enjoyed working there,” Solem said.
As far as sports, football is his favorite where he plays tailback and defensive back. He says he likes playing offense more than defense.
“Just because of the amount of work you need to put in and being with my friends and building that bond,” Solem said of why he prefers football.
One of his teammates this season was his younger brother Brooks, who is a freshman wide receiver and defensive back. “It’s a pretty cool experience,” Carson said. He offers advice, but he doesn’t know how often his brother actually listens to him. “That’s the thing. It’s rare, but I do think deep down he knows,” Carson said of listening to experience.
During track season, Carson’s favorite and best event is the long jump.
In the classroom, Carson enjoys English class with Shelly Salvevold. “She teaches it in a way that makes it easy to understand,” Solem said.
The senior’s favorite teacher is Logan Nickoloff for industrial arts.
“I’ve known him my whole life and he’s enjoyable,” Solem said. “You learn things in the shop with him.”
Carson also doesn’t mind having classes with his father, Dave Solem.
“He’s pretty cool,” the student said. “There were a few times we had little arguments, but it’s pretty fun.”
Carson attended school in Culbertson throughout his life.
“It’s a good place to grow up and go to school,” Solem said. “The teachers and community are pretty supportive.”
