Gysler Sentenced For Assaulting Police Officer
Wolf Point native Paul Kermit Gysler has received a partially suspended five-year sentence with the Montana Department of Corrections.
On March 9, Judge Robert Allison announced a fiveyear sentence with three of those years suspended as well as credit for 357 days of time served. Allison also recommended state corrections officials screen Gysler for an appropriate treatment program before turning the 41-year-old back over to the custody of the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.
Gysler was convicted of assaulting a Whitefish Police officer in 2021. A jury found him guilty on a single count of felony assault on a peace officer in December following a trial in Flathead County District Court.
After a police officer allegedly saw Gysler urinating in public near city hall during the early morning hours of July 17, 2021, the officer approached Gysler. Gysler was “immediately agitated,” according to court documents. When the officer instructed him to put his hands behind his back, Gysler pushed away and tensed up.
When the officer failed to put Gysler on the ground, Gysler went on top of the officer and used his body weight to hold him down, according to court documents. The officer regained control by using a stun gun, but not before suffering injuries to his elbow and finger.
