Red Hawks Knock Off Fusion, 61-41
After a tight first quarter, Froid/Lake started to pull away and downed Richey/ Lambert, 61-41, at the District 2C boys’ basketball tournament on Thursday, Feb. 16.
The Red Hawks led by only an 18-16 margin at the end of the first quarter, and a basket by Joshua Sponheim tied the game at 18-18 to open the second period.
A free throw by Mason Dethman started an 11-0 streak for the Red Hawks. Joey Boyd accounted for 10 straight points, including two three-pointers, to put Froid/ Lake ahead 29-18.
A 17-footer by Nate Stentoft at the buzzer ended the half with the Red Hawks ahead 35-26.
After a three-point play by Sponheim pulled the Fusion to 35-29, the Red Hawks responded with a drive by Stentoft, a basket by Dethman and a short jumper by Max Engelke. The Red Hawks held a 4635 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was highlighted by Froid/Lake’s Landen Kelm providing a spark off the bench with five points in the period. A threepoint play by Dethman put the Red Hawks ahead, 58-39, with 3:02 remaining.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Dethman with 25 and Boyd with 12 points. Also scoring were L. Kelm with eight, Stentoft with seven, Engelke with five, Bighorn with two and Canden Kelm with two.
Dethman finished with 14 rebounds and three assists.
Leading the Fusion were Sponheim with 13, Austin Lien with 10 and Layne Herman with nine points. Herman had five assists in the contest.
