Cowgirls Drop Match Against Jordan
The Culbertson Cowgirls put up a strong fight before falling to Jordan, 15-25, 12-25, 24-26, during the opening round of the Eastern C divisional volleyball tournament in Sidney on Thursday, Nov. 4.
The Cowgirls trailed 10-5 in the first set until the net play of Destiny Thompson closed the gap to 11-7. Jordan was able to move ahead 17-10, but Culbertson fought back with two kills by Makena Hauge for a 17-12 contest.
Jordan, however, went on to win the first set by a 25-15 final.
Kills and aces by Sophie Kreider led the Mustangs to a 4-0 advantage in the second set. After kills by Culbertson’s Thompson and Perla Burciaga, Jordan went ahead 11-4 on the net play of Lindsay Lawrence.
An ace by Lawrence and a kill by Kreider increased the gap to 15-4.
The Cowgirls got as close as 17-7 on a pair of aces by Hauge. A block by Thompson pulled Culbertson to 198.
The Mustangs led 22-11 until kills by Hauge closed the margin to 23-12. Jordan won the second set by a 25-12 final.
Culbertson fell behind early in the third set, but the Cowgirls came through with a solid performance in the game. Three straight kills by Hauge put the Cowgirls up 7-5. Later, the net play of Hauge produced an 11-8 advantage. A kill by Kenadee Kempton increased the gap to 12-8.
After Jordan cut the margin to 15-12, the Cowgirls responded with kills by Hauge, Kempton and Thompson for a 19-13 advantage.
Ahead by a 21-19 score, the Cowgirls used a pair of kills by Hauge to take a 23-19 lead. The Cowgirls led 24-22, but Jordan tallied the last four points of the match.
Hauge led the Cowgirls with 16 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and five aces.
Koree Marchwick, who was injured late in the match, led the Cowgirls in assists.
Leading Jordan was Lawrence with 12 kills and nine digs.
