Students Take Part In Red Ribbon Week

With the goal of getting kids off to the right path, several activities were held last week at Southside Elementary School for Red Ribbon Week.
Joelle Page, school counselor, said one fun and Halloween related event was making monsters to scare off any drugs.
A Red Ribbon Week parade was conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 27. Special days included “Team Up Against Drugs” on Oct. 25, “Sock It To Drugs” on Oct. 26, “Too Cool For Drugs” on Oct. 27, and “We’re Reddy To Make a Difference” on Oct. 28.
Students wore crazy socks for “Sock It To Drugs” day on Oct. 26. The socks were donated by Eastern Montana Mental Health.
“They loved that,” Page said. Each of the elementary students also received sunglasses in order to be too cool to do drugs.
On Wednesday, Roosevelt County deputy Michael Ellerton and his dog, Hati, from the K-9 unit presented a program at the school.
Ellerton explained how powerful a dog’s sense of smell and how that helps law enforcements. “It’s almost like a super power,” he said.
Page noted that students signed a poster to be bully and drug free. Part of the instruction was explaining what bullying can entail.
She explained how different lessons were given to different age groups. For example, kindergarten and first-graders were taught not to pick something off the ground and put it in their mouths. Third-graders were told not to the harmful impacts of using cigarettes.
