It has been a school year of transition for Poplar teacher Ted Fulgham, and he has appreciated it more that he even anticipated.

“I’ve definitely enjoyed the atmosphere here,” Fulgham said of Poplar. “Everybody tries to help each other out.”

Fulgham’s school year included starting Poplar’s first FFA chapter since the 1940s.

He feels his biggest accomplishments have included taking students to the FFA state convention and competing at district FFA contests.

“It’s been something new here. It’s been exciting to get things started,” Fulgham said. “I’m excited for next year.”

One of the most recent accomplishments has been starting a greenhouse at the school. The garden features flowers, corn and carrots. Fulgham said his horticulture students and eighth-graders have especially liked the project. He plans to have a couple of students water the garden throughout the summer. Some of the plants might be sold as a fundraiser at the end of May.

Fulgham, who has signed his teaching contract for next school year, is pleased that he will also teach three woods classes starting next fall.

“The staff and administrators have been really supportive,” he said. “The school is open to new ideas to help teach the kids.”

The FFA program includes nine active members. The group meets each Friday.

“Most of the students are eager to learn. I enjoy the atmosphere of the school,” Fulgham said. “The kids are here to learn.”
