Golfers, Others Show Spirit At Derby Event

Fun was the name of the game at Wolf Point’s airport golf course Saturday, May 1.
The third Run For the Roses Derby Day, sponsored by Opportunity Bank, attracted golfers and other participants alike wearing a variety of attire in recognition of the Kentucky Derby. “We just decided to do something to kick off the golf season,” Duane Kurokawa, branch president of Opportunity Bank, explained how the event started.
Along with a golf derby, the day featured other highlights including the traditional Kentucky derby treats Kentucky hot brown sandwiches, pecan pie and mint julep drinks.
The bank organized activities and paid for the food.
“Everybody had fun,” Kurokawa said. The nine-hole derby format included a drawing to decide partners. Each team included a golfer with a low handicap and a higher handicap. Chipoff and other contests were conducted. The day ended with watching the famous horse race on the television.
Tori Matejovsky, president of the golf club’s board, said the Run for The Roses Derby Day was a great way to kick off the golf season in Wolf Point.
She said it was nice that organizers put up decorations inside and arrived in fun clothing to create a positive, relaxing atmosphere.
“It’s not just for the golfers, but it’s for everyone,” Matejovsky said.
