The Culbertson track program is enjoying an excellent turnout of 31 athletes to start this season.

Coach Dave Solem said this is the program’s best numbers in 17 years. He feels that not having a season last year resulted in more students wanting to try the sport this time around.

There isn’t a lot of high school track experience, however, because of last season being canceled due to COVID concerns.

“This is completely a new team,” Solem said. “It’s a mystery.”

Abbey Granbois, a senior, has enjoyed success at the high school level. She earned fourth place in the high jump at the Class C state meet as a sophomore.

Other seniors on the squad include Anissa Bengochea, Cody Larsen, cross country standout Colby Olson and Michael Pederson in throwing events, “Most of the kids out do other sports,” Solem said.

The coach notes that the turnout is pretty much equally divided between boys and girls. It’s also fairly equal between the four classes.

“We’re all across the board. We average about seven a class, which is great,” Solem said.

Culbertson will open its season in Glasgow on Thursday, April 1.

The District 2C meet is set for Tuesday, May 11, in Lambert and the Eastern C divisional meet is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, in Sidney.

One of the goals is to be one of the district’s top three teams this season. “That is what we’re hoping,” Solem said.
