Darius Walter

Darius Walter, 81, of Prairie Elk Colony died Feb. 28, 2021.

He was born on Aug. 1, 1939, to Elias and Susie Walter at the King Ranch Colony, near Lewistown. In 1963, he moved to Stanford, where he helped to establish Surprise Creek Colony.

On June 14, 1964, he married Annie and, together, they raised nine children.

He was a farmer all his life and had a great love for the land. In 1969, he became farm boss at Surprise Creek Colony. He managed this job for 25 years. Then, in 1995, he became financial manager at Surprise Creek Colony and continued to manage Prairie Elk Colony until 2018.

In 2006, he and his family moved to Prairie Elk Colony near Wolf Point, a place that he loved with all his heart.

He had a passion for farming. He loved to watch the fields grow from the tiny seeds and put his faith in God as the seeds turned into amber waves of grain.

His love for farming continued on in his sons. He had a heart of gold and had a giving heart for the poor. He was a very kind hearted man. He loved to go for evening rides with his wife and anybody who wanted to come along, especially in the summertime when the crops were in full bloom.

He is survived by his wife, Annie; nine children, Dan, Terry, Benny, Annie Marie and Bill of Prairie Elk Colony, Sally, Becky and Linda of Surprise Creek Colony and Debbie of North Harlem Colony; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul, Joe and David; and sister, Mary.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Eli, Ben and Leonard; and sister, Rachel.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, March 3, at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Elk Colony, south of Wolf Point.
