Library Invites Families To Share Books

A few minutes with a picture book may seem like a small part of a child’s day. But those moments — sitting together, turning pages and following a story — can add up to something special.

Culbertson Public Library is inviting families to participate in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a free nationwide program that encourages parents and caregivers to read aloud regularly to young children.

The goal is simple: Share 1,000 books before a child begins kindergarten.

While the number may sound like a tall order, one book each night adds up to 365 in a year. At that pace, families can reach the finish line in less than three years.

The program is available to families with children from birth through age 5, giving parents an opportunity to begin sharing books long before their little ones can read independently.

Those simple exchanges make reading a shared experience. A picture on the page can spark a question, a silly rhyme can bring a laugh, and a story can open a conversation about something a child has never encountered before.

Reading aloud also introduces children to new words and helps build the early literacy skills they will use when they enter school.

Although kindergarten is the milestone in the program’s name, its purpose reaches beyond the first day of school: encouraging a love of books that children can carry with them as they grow.

Registration is open at Culbertson Public Library, and participation is free. For more information or to learn how to sign up, call 406787-5275.
