Daniels Commissioners Discuss Stonegarden Funding

The Daniels County commissioners held their regular public meetings Oct. 5-6.

Ben Kimball with the U.S. Border Patrol addressed the commissioners about Operation Stonegarden and reporting procedures for recouping overtime and other costs.

Miscommunications in reporting have resulted in more than four years of underutilized federal funding for area law enforcement.

Sheriff Clint Lowe said he would look into the matter.

Operation Stonegarden provides funding to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to support joint efforts with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol.

Sheriff Lowe provided a general update on law enforcement activity. In particular, he pledged to find ways to cut back on overtime spending.

A motion was passed approving the purchase of four sidearms for the sheriff’s office, along with lights and sites.

Arlene Kegley told commissioners that Daniels County Library staff is in the process of becoming official ambassadors for Fish, Wildlife and Parks to facilitate applications for hunting and fishing licenses locally.

Public Health director Brittni Cromwell said a flu clinic is planned for Oct. 23 at Pro Co-op Ag Center. Rides will be provided upon request. All ages are welcome.

The commissioners discussed policy options about retention and storage of recordings of the commissioners meetings. No action was taken.

Their next meeting is set for Oct. 19.
