Berwick Aims High On Court, In The Classroom, Beyond
Culbertson Senior
Emma Berwick has earned a place in Culbertson’s record book. Now, the senior is looking toward her next goal: heading to college, pursuing a career in medicine and hopefully taking her love of sports with her.
A Culbertson student since kindergarten, Berwick has spent her high school years balancing volleyball, basketball and track with activities that keep her involved beyond the gym.
Her accomplishments include qualifying for state in discus every year of high school and setting the school shot put record with a throw of 34 feet, 9 inches.
On the volleyball court, she earned all-conference honors during her sophomore and junior seasons. She also participated in a basketball all-star game as a post player.
After graduation, Berwick plans to attend college in North Dakota. She hopes to continue competing in volleyball, track or both while studying for a career in the medical field. She is still exploring which area of medicine interests her most.
Along with athletics, Berwick participates in FFA and Explore America and serves as student council secretary, adding another responsibility to her busy school schedule.
In the classroom, child development with Shelby Manning is her favorite class.
Her favorite teacher is Dave Solem, who teaches history.
A few simpler favorites round out her school experience: Red Bull, sour candy and a lunch she would gladly welcome back — personal pan pizzas.
Berwick has one sister and four brothers. Her parents are Daniel and Amy Berwick and Mandy Byrd.
For younger students beginning their own high school experience, Berwick offers advice drawn from a lesson she learned firsthand: Take freshman and sophomore years seriously.
She said not doing so meant she had to work harder during her junior and senior years to get where she wanted to be.
As graduation draws closer, Berwick has both accomplishments to celebrate and decisions ahead. The next school record or athletic opportunity may be part of that future, but so is finding a career where she can put her interest in medicine to work.
