Volunteers Work To Place Pocket Constitutions To Students
As part of a national partnership between the Convention of States Foundation and the 917 Society, Montana volunteers are working to provide pocket copies of the U.S. Constitution to Montana Schools by Constitution Day 2026.
Sharon Jensen, a Convention of States Montana district captain, has set a goal of reaching all 256 schools identified for the effort. She has developed a tracking spreadsheet to coordinate deliveries and has already secured COS volunteers to cover more than 250 Montana schools.
Jensen also took the initiative to work with the Montana Secretary of State’s Office to provide students with copies of the Montana Constitution at the same time they receive the pocket U.S. Constitution. The state has enthusiastically embraced the project and agreed to print more than 12,000 pocket copies of the Montana Constitution for delivery by the Montana Convention of States team.
The statewide effort is part of the 917 Society’s mission to place a free, durable pocket constitution in the hands of every eighth-grader in America. The organization provides Constitutions and civic- education resources to help students engage directly with the document that defines the structure of government and protects individual rights. The 917 Society is marking America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 by distributing special commemorative editions to students nationwide.
Convention of States Foundation volunteers in all 50 states are participating in the Constitution Day initiative, helping deliver the pocket Constitutions directly to students and schools.
“Montana students deserve the opportunity to read and keep both the United States Constitution and their own state Constitution,” Jensen said. “This project gives volunteers, schools and state leaders a meaningful way to work together to strengthen civic understanding.”
Constitution Day is observed each year on Sept. 17, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Through the partnership, the Convention of States Foundation and the 917 Society hope to make the nation’s founding document accessible to students while encouraging a deeper understanding of citizenship, self-government and Montana’s constitutional heritage.
