Program Provides Activities For Wolf Point Students
Some of Wolf Point’s students went to the birds on Wednesday, Sept. 17. As part of the Canku program in Wolf Point, students had the opportunity to create birdhouses after school that day.
Bryor Smith, coordinator of the Wolf Point Canku program, explains that the junior high and high school students participating were making the birdhouses out of kits that were ordered. The students were enjoying painting the small birdhouses.
“It’s just one of the after school activities I’ve planned this year,” Smith said.
Although the event featured only 6-12 grade students, Smith explained that younger students are welcomed to attend as well.
Other projects this school year will include making picture frames, Ojibwe tribal handbags and tie blankets.
Smith is excited about offering turkey bingo again around the Thanksgiving holiday. “I’ve been doing that the last few years,” he said.
He explains the program provides social and emotional support to students.
The program is funded through a federal grant that the Fort Peck Community College receives.
Along with the coordinator for Wolf Point’s program, Smith also helps with the high school’s dual credit and early college programs.
This is the fourth year of the five-year grant for the Canku program to provide activities. A goal is to get students more involved throughout the year.
