Scobey Hosts Large Volleyball Tournament
Scobey’s volleyball squad had a very busy weekend on its home court during the weekend.
The Spartans opened their hectic schedule with a four-set conference victory over North Country on Friday night.
Scobey then played host to the 16-team Scobey Invitational on Saturday. Defending state champion Circle defeated Jordan in the championship match.
The Spartans lost their two of their first three matches in pool play. Scobey defeated Plevna but fell against Jordan and Richey/Lambert.
Scobey then knocked off MonDak by a 25-18, 14-11 final.
Down by an 8-6 margin in the first set, the Spartans grabbed the lead on kills by Chloe Handran and Emery Rouse. An ace by Halle Cromwell put the margin at 11-8.
The Thunder tied the score at 15-15, but Scobey responded with kills by Ava Stentoft and Handran. A block by Cromwell and a powerful kill by Rouse increased the margin to 20-17.
Ahead by a 20-18 margin, the Spartans accounted for the final five points of the opening set including two on back-row kills by Handran and another on a kill by Rouse.
In the second set, aces by Ainsley Berryhill and Handran led the Spartans to a 9-5 advantage.
After a kill by Rouse put the margin at 11-9, Scobey went on to earn a 14-11 victory. The match ended due to the time limit.
Scobey then defeated Culbertson 25-8, 25-11, in its next pool play match.
The Spartans jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set on the serving of Rouse and net play of Handran. Kills by Stentoft, Handran and Cromwell increased the gap to 10-2.
Ahead by an 18-8 score, Scobey ran off the last seven points of the set on a pair of aces by Cromwell and kills by Rouse.
Culbertson used the ace serving of Stella Fox to earn a 10-6 lead in the second set. The hard spiking of Rouse led Scobey to an 11-10 advantage. An ace by Handran and kills by Cromwell and Rouse put the margin at 14-10.
The serving of Handran and net play of Rouse highlighted action as Scobey went out to a 21-11 lead. The match’s final two points were scored on an ace by Paige McGillis and a kill by Rouse.
Scobey advanced to the elimination play of the tournament, but the Spartans lost to Broadus in the opening round.
The Spartans will host Circle on Thursday, Sept. 17.
