School Board Covers Summer Repairs

The Wolf Point School Board received a report on Monday, Aug. 12, regarding a variety of facility repairs that occurred during the summer.

Shane Reed, facilities director, said, “We had a great group of people working this summer. I’m really proud of the kids we’ve got hired right now. We got quite a big accomplished.”

Improvements at the high school/junior high school included the gym floor being repainted and coated, the track being completed, fencing at the main entrance, leaks in the roof repaired, duct work cleaned, hot water heater replaced, parking lot swept and painted, restroom put in the new bus barn, Epoxy floor repaired in wrestling room and doors and awning in gym entrance.

At Northside, repairs included landscaping and painting at the main entrance, painting the library, scraping and painting the hand railing at former district office and improving the gym floor.

At Southside, improvements were a tree removed from the playground, installing a steel door for a shed, improving the gym, painting classrooms and halls and replacing water pumps.

Work at the district office included moving the heating unit downstairs and replacing the roof.

A change order was approved for the high school’s boiler piping project. Repairs are needed until new joints are installed.

Hired were Lasty Mendoza as a junior high math teacher, Riley Schwarzrock as a Southside paraprofessional, Jessica Simons as a Northside paraprofessional and Michelle White Hawk as a junior high/high school paraprofessional.

Rheanna Wetsit was transferred to assistant head cook and Sonia Martell- Hawk was transferred to assistant cook.

Extra-curricular hires were Kelby Bauer as assistant cross country coach, Angie Swenson as Indian Club advisor, Andrew Vun as junior high volunteer assistant volleyball coach, Dahlia Hamilton as junior high assistant volleyball coach, Dave Allen as high school assistant flag football coach and Keyvin Brock as junior high head football coach.

Trustees approved a three-year classified nonunion payscale. They tabled an extra-curricular salary schedule.

Student handbooks were approved.

Discussion took place regarding the need of additional buses because of increase participation amounts in sports.

Activities director Cody Larson reported that he feels energy and effort are important for student athletes to achieve success with programs. He wants honestly between himself and coaches and also between himself and trustees. “If I’m honest with coaches, I feel I can give you honest information in return,” Larson said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perkins mentioned that he disagrees with trends regarding different accreditation standards. He said ACT scores are no longer a good measure.

Perkins said negotiations with classified workers have hit a standstill. Trustee Michael Turcotte discussed the dangers of students driving motorcycles and ATVs to schools. He said he has seen junior high students driving the vehicles. He asked if it could be a potential lawsuit against the schools. Perkins said a more likely liability is issues with an open campus.
