Local Church Hosts Activities At Park
Area individuals gathered at the Sherman Park gazebo in Wolf Point three nights last week for musical services provided by God’s Grace Community Church.
The church, formerly Morning Star, was celebrating its one-year anniversary. Pastor Billy Joe explained that the church, which is located at 500 Helena St., specializes in people who are struggling with addiction.
“The worst thing you can do as an addict is being alone with your thoughts,” the pastor said of why the outdoor event was conducted.
He said between 180200 people came to the park each night. The church provided meals for those attending.
“We want people to know there’s freedom and happiness in Christ,” Pastor Billy Joe said. “The Jesus in the New Testament is the same Jesus as today.”
Members of the group Jesus Jam entertained with a variety of songs each of the nights. The program ran from 6-9 p.m.
A highlight was a Poplar man who celebrated being clean from meth for three years. Instead of going to rehab, the individual turned his life over to God.
“It can be done,” Pastor Billy Joe said. “We want to encourage them that there’s a better way of life.”
The pastor has been cleaned for 12 years, but he doesn’t describe himself as a recovered addict. “We believe with Christ, we’re no longer the old person. As soon as I surrendered my life to Jesue, I’m new.”
