Students Participate In 4-H Stir-ups Food Contest

Roosevelt County is taking 4-H cooking to another level – the Stirups level.

Stir-ups is a newer competition in 4-H that is loosely based on the cooking show “Chopped.” Participants are given a theme, a list of provided ingredients and they can bring their own “mystery” ingredient to add to their dish.

The contestants have 60 minutes to prepare a dish, clean up their workstations, and plate their dish. Then, they have 15 minutes to discuss with the judge what they made and their recipe.

On June 8, there were six participants in the first “real” competition. It was introduced last year, but this year it was run with the running clocks and presentations. There were 2 Cloverbud competitors – Tawnie Traeger and Kryal Powell, who partnered with big sister Emmilyn Priddy-Powell. Junior competitors earning blue ribbons were Kashton Flinn, Makinzie Olson and Tacey Traeger, with Tacey being the overall winner. The theme of this year’s contest was “Chef’s Choice.”
