On April 15, U.S. Sens. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), John Boozman (R-Ark.) and Rapael Warnock (D-Ga.) led a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reinforcing their support of the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement and urged expanded market access and stability for American producers.

Signed by 37 additional U.S. senators, including Tim Sheehy, the letter encourages close coordination with Congress and agricultural producers to strengthen the agreement and encourage continued strong market access.

Established on July 1, 2020, the USMCA is a free trade agreement that replaced the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The USMCA, scheduled to terminate in 2036, is scheduled for a joint review this July which will allow a term extension if all three countries are in agreement.

The agreement outlines regulations for duty-free trade among the three countries and dedication to non-tariff issues including labor, environment, investment, digital trade and services.

In meetings with Congress in December 2025, Greer suggested potential topics for the upcoming joint review. Among those are bilateral trade issues with Canada regarding dairy market access, digital services and provincial restrictions on the distribution of U.S. alcohol. Also mentioned were agriculture, labor and energy matters with Mexico.

As the world’s largest agricultural exporter, with exports totaling $176 billion in 2024, the U.S. relies on the USMCA to help keep the majority of our producers competitive globally, address unfair practices and remove trade barriers.

Key products like wheat, corn and oilseeds continue to have a strong trade surplus with Canada and Mexico.
