Lustre Grade School held its eighth grade graduation on Tuesday, May 19. Harlo Reddig, Ava Holzrichter, Joseph Olfert, Justin Schiller, Gunner Damboise, Coleman Hilkemann, Liam Reyneke graduated. Supervising teacher Jeanne Matthyser welcomed parents and guests, giving observations about each grad.
Awards were presented by 7-8th grade teacher, Luanne Mullet. She reviewed the results from the three major tests - Math Counts Regionals, State Math Counts and Academic Olympics. She said they did “a great job” individually. LGS placed first at Math Counts Regionals as a team (Harlo Reddig, Justin Schiller, Jake Neufeld, Coleman Hilkemann; Gunner Damboise alternate). At regionals, Liam Reneke and Justin Schiller were awarded Gold placing in the top 3-10 percent of Montana math students. Nancy Schiller, Jake Neufeld, Coleman Hilkemann were awarded silver, and Hannah Pankratz earned bronze. Harlo Reddig was awarded platinum, which means she was in the top 2 percent of Montana students in regionals and she was recognized as the top scorer for middle school at Math Counts Regionals. Drew Reddig, Sam Byres, Brielle Keller, Ava Holzrichter, Gunner Damboise, Abri Klatt and Bryanna Allen received regional math contest participant awards. First, second and third were taken by Lustre in problem solving content: Harlo, Justin, Coleman. In the composite section, Justin Schiller and Harlo Reddig tied for first individually, and Liam Reneke placed fourth. At State Math Counts, Liam and Harlo tied for first in the problem solving, Justin was fifth.
The Lustre team took first place in Academic Olympics in Glasgow. Giving their placements in the tests, Mullet said “The students do not just work hard on the sports fields, and in other ways, but also in the classroom.”
Commencement speaker Brooke Holzrichter spoke as a parent and their track coach. She talked on the benefi ts of positive self-talk. She advised 1) “Just smile. Smiling helps the brain relax and drop the heart rate. 2) Notice what you start thinking about. Instead of motivational talking to yourself (“come on, you got this”), instruct yourself instead. Out think the negative thoughts. 3) Remember God’s promises. God made us for a purpose. God made each of us individually. Start with God’s Word. Read your Bible. It’s a strong foundation.” She had each student find and read aloud the paper under their chair and read the verse she’d put there. They read II Timothy 1:7 addressing fear; Deuteronomy 31:6 addressing strength; Psalms 139:14 on being remarkably made; I Peter 2:9 on being a child of the King of kings; Eph1:7 on being forgiven; Isaiah 54:10 on not being alone; John 15:16 on being chosen; Duet 20:4 on being a conqueror. Holzritzer closed with “you must practice this because practice makes progress.”
Mr. Damboise, one of the parents of the graduates, closed the graduation in prayer.
