As she nears the finish line of her high school career, Bainville senior Hailey Berwick can look back at a successful last four years at the school.

She has earned accomplishment not only on the athletic field but also through FFA and Business Professionals of America.

Berwick, who is vice president of the school’s National Honor Society and her class, has been involved in FFA for four years. During that time, honors have included being on state placing teams for veterinary science and parliamentary procedures. She has taken second place individually in vet science at the district level.

Her plans are to major in biology at the University of Jamestown, N.D., and then move onto vet science studies.

Berwick’s senior year in FFA was capped by earning a state degree. “It was definitely a long process to get the application filled out,” Berwick said of the award. “I’ve been keeping records through high school.”

She said BPA has also been a positive learning experience for her. She is a member of Bainville’s team that qualified for nationals in small business management. Berwick says she is looking forward to attending the national conference.

In addition, Berwick also was on teams that placed at state in parliamentary procedures and banking and finance.

She said she has learned a good deal regarding business, accounting and being a leader through BPA. “And I learned more about myself,” she added.

A community service project that she is pleased with is having National Honor Society members help with lunch on Tuesdays at the community’s senior center.

In sports, Berwick has been a three-year standout for the Bulldogs.

Her favorite sport is volleyball where she has earned All-State honors twice. She has signed a letter of intent to play at Jamestown.

“I’ve really enjoyed all my high school experiences in volleyball,” she explained.

Playing with other eastern Montana girls on an AAU team has increased her love for the sport. “It’s become my life,” Berwick said.

Her high school highlights in volleyball have included hitting the match-ending kill to upset Scobey at the divisional tournament when she was a junior.

In basketball, Berwick has been selected All-State three times. Highlights have included winning the conference championship last year and beating Richey/Lambert in the district title game as a senior.

After placing third in the 400-meter dash at the state meet last season, Berwick is looking for more success this year. She also qualified for state in the 100, 200 and both relays last season.

“I would like to pre-qualify in the 400, but the time is tough,” Berwick said of her goals. The senior also hopes to place in more than one event at the state meet.

A new event for her is the javelin this season. She calls it a break from running. “I do enjoy it a lot,” she said.

She has gone to school in Bainville throughout her life and appreciates how teachers are dedicated to help students as much as they can.

Berwick is the salutatorian for the class. She is slowly working on her graduation speech.

“I’m really excited about it,” she said of the accomplishment. “It’s always been one of my goals.”
