A good turnout recognized the hard work of artists from the Bigger Sky Kids program during an art show enjoyed at the Roosevelt County Library on Saturday, March 14.

Instructor Cathryn McIntyre said the 32 pieces of work were more than last year’s first show. She said 10 more prints were available but were juried out.

Each of the students that had art work displayed has been taught by McIntyre for at least two years. Since last year’s show, she said their attention to detail has improved greatly.

“I like that I have the opportunity to develop friendships with these students,” McIntyre said. “I get to know their challenges and see their successes.”

Grants make it possible for her to instruct at Bigger Sky Kids once a week. She describes her classroom there as an incubator to foster the students’ abilities.

The students create oil and water color pieces. McIntyre encourages them to paint what they want to paint instead of her providing the subject.

The class is geared for fourth through eighth graders, but older students can keep attending if they are willing to volunteer at the program once a week.

“With this crop going through, I’m anticipating about three of four volunteers in the next couple of years,” McIntyre said.

She feels the art show is a positive way to honor what the students are accomplishing.

“It’s really important for the students to have the feel of being special and celebrated,” she said.
