Grant To Help Student’s Path For Art Career
Wolf Point High School freshman Sophia Fourbear recently received a great chance to enhance her artistic skills by earning a grant to attend the Gabriel Coke Art Camp this summer in Saratoga, Calif.
Fourbear is a recipient of a $7,500 grant from the Kaj Seifert Foundation. Fourbear said the grant will cover supplies, lodging, fuel expenses and food for the oil painting workshop that will last for two weeks in June.
“It’s pretty big for me, being on the reservation we don’t see amounts that big,” Fourbear said. “I was pretty much shocked and excited.”
To apply for the scholarship, she needed to provide a video that included her purpose, her supply needs, her mentor and explaining how the foundation could help.
“It was a very heart-warming video,” she said.
Fourbear explained that her family has a history of artistic talent, but she wants her ability to reach a higher level.
She said she has done art work pretty much ever since she could walk. It has always been a love for her.
After transferring from Poplar, Fourbear wasn’t eligible to play volleyball for the Wolves this past fall because of Montana High School Association’s transfer rules. She took the time to really concentrate on her art work by creating prints and ledgers.
She thanks Wolf Point’s art teacher Vivian Schultz for being a positive influence for her.
“It’s been really big for me to have someone like that,” Fourbear said.
The variety of Fourbear’s art includes multi media pieces, ledger art and oil painting.
The art camp will make an impact in her path to an art career.
“I’m confident I will make a name for myself one of these days,” she said. “But school first.”
