After Brockton defeated Savage, 72-43, in the District 2C boys’ basketball game on Saturday, several players immediately jumped on top of Coach John Nygard to celebrate.

The Warriors understood what the title meant not only for them, but especially to their coach and, for that matter, the entire community of Brockton.

Nygard said it was Brockton’s first district boys’ basketball championship since 2004.

“It’s something we’ve been working for,” an emotional Nygard said after the victory. “I’m so proud of these boys.”

Seniors on the squad were Josh Firemoon, Miles Boxer and Ronnie Black Dog.

“It’s something we’ve been working and working for,” Nygard said of winning the title.

Brockton broke loose from a 16-10 game in the first quarter with five points by Jarid FastHorse and a drive by Miles Boxer to earn a 23-12 lead at the end of the period.

Three-pointers by Adden Erickson kept Savage close for most of the second quarter, The half ended with Brockton holding a 35-24 advantage.

Firemoon enjoyed a big third quarter for Brockton as the lead was increased to 18 points. Brockton then struck for the last seven points of the period for a 55-30 margin.

Three-pointers by Boxer and FastHorse helped put Brockton up by a 68-35 margin with only five minutes remaining.

Top scorers for Brockton were FastHorse with 18, Colter Nygard with 17 and Firemoon with 16, Rounding out the scoring were Boxer with eight, Tefton Bear with seven, Weston Lambert with two, CoDean BigEagle with two and Black Dog with two.

Leading Savage were Jaxcen Sanders with 14, Boden Jorgensen with 11 points and Erickson with nine.
